Production plan with consideration for visual and special effects
- The piece I’ve chosen to do is a film trailer of a man who likes to day dream, that being a happy or sad day dream.
- My chosen running time is around 1’30” to 2′ long
- The story begins with a black screen with sirens and car alarms going off in the background then a young male named Alex wakes up with blood on his face and an explosion that has already happened in the background, we see Alex in shock he looks around to see what has happened he is in disbelieve suddenly a second explosion goes off the screen cuts to black when they see Alex wake up from his daydream and he’s stuck in traffic in his works clothes an then a car horn goes off from behind him.
- For my visual and special effect I attend to show an explosion though a side car window I’m attempting to show the after aftermath of one explosion and then doing another explosion in the scene I will be creating all of this on computer to create the CGI explosion there will also be smoke, fire and rubble throughout the first part of it, and when the second explosion happens it will be a really big one in the background of the scene. I am planning to film someone in the car from the drivers door, looking on a side profile of the character so we can see through the opposite window, where the explosions will happen. In one part of the scene i am wanting to use sugar glass as one of my props to show that the window has shattered form the explosion. I hope to film the person in the car then layer on the special effects of the crumblings buildings and an explosion.
- For my planned visual effects I am hoping to do a digital composting of an explosion going on in the back ground, I also hope to add smoke to really make it as realistic as possible. I imagine it to be a massive fire ball explosions with many little explosions going off with smoke covering them to really enhance the visual effect for the audience. This then will allow them to really believe the story.
- For my special effects I hope to add fake blood to my character to make it look like he's been in some devastating accident, this will help the audience really feel as if its been a rally bad accident, I also hope to add sugar glass to show that his window has shattered from this terrible accident. I imagine the window to be shattered onto the car seat next to him and some glass to be also shattered onto his lap, the sugar glass will help create this visual effects to be as realistic as possible, and if I also change the colour grading this will give the glass a beautiful dark tone which will really match to the plot. I believe if I do this it will make it very realistic for the audience.
- The target audience will be for teenagers aged 15 upwards to young adults (25) as it is an action packed trailer. Throughout the trailer there will be blood and explosions this would appeal to more of the younger demographic and would also mainly suit boys as it is a dark and is very surreal but also it uses explosions and blood, this is the stereotype which goes with boys and men so they would be the key target audience for this trailer.
This video I am taking inspiration from:
This is the kind of explosion I will be wanting to use in my finished product, I really think the explosion looks really effective especially with the smoke in the background which is again i would like to use. I think personally this video is a very good example of what my video may look like as I want to get a dark grey tone to the video to give it that sorrow look, and hopefully it will first perfectly with the story line and the scene.
Script:
Storyboard
Recce:
My location for my film is set on top of the grand arcade car park in town. This is a great location as it fits with my storyboard perfectly and is also the look I am going for; especially in this time of year when the ground is wet and it gets dark earlier, it allows this beautiful reflection to bounce of the floor and into my shot. This is also a great location as everyone knows where it is and its easy to access. I also feel that its a perfect place to film as at certain points in the day the car park is normally empty, so to the audiences eye it will look like its a deserted car park which will really at to the effect of the short piece.
Budget consideration:
This is how much money my project will cost; £30.24
I counted all the costs together and it came out to £30.24. My equipment will all be free as I have my own camera I can use, also my brother is allowing me to use his car for the film which will be easier than renting a car. However I will need to pay for parking in the car park which is £2.30 for an hour. For my crew I am getting my dad to shoot behind the scenes for me and my brother is willing to do the acting for me and for free. I am also doing the filming myself.
I will need makeup prosthetics, to create fake blood to make it look like there is a cut on my actor, this will cost between £5 to £15

Evaluate the feasibility of the visual and special effects:
Risk assessment:
Safe working environment:
My working environment will be safe as I will make sure the car we are using is parked on the side of the road (legally) with either hazards or indicator on, I will also make sure it is on level ground with it in park or the keys out the ignition so it does not roll away. I will always make sure any wires or equipment are not lying around, so they are not a tripping hazard, I will do this by obviously marking it. For making sure the actor is not ill I will ask the actor in advance to the shoot ( 24 hours before) if they are feeling okay and they don’t have a temperature. I will lay out the rules before hand of the shoot making sure everyone knows what is happening and to make sure everyone is okay with it.
Production:
In my shoot I do not have any real explosions only CGI explosions, part of the scene is an image of a building being blown to pieces.
Someone can be hurt by tripping over any equipment that is out. So the skills the production team will need would be common sense, So to make sure they are aware of their surroundings whilst on set. Solutions to solve this problem would be always make sure all wires and any equipment is clearly marked, and if not in use they can be put away in a safe place where they are not in the way. The cost for this solution is free as the crew are just using common sense, and the feasibility of this solution is really easy to do. This risk could apply to the production peice as if we where on set and the actor tripped over any lose wires or equipment and hurt themselves this would then mean we would have to push back filming days and this would mean we lose days to film so the solution does apply to the production and allows to film as smoothly and quickly as possible.
Actor becomes ill as we are outside and at this time of the year it gets very cold. The skills the production team would need would be to understand they need to wrap up warm and make sure they are always hydrated and never hungry. So the resources I would use to implement this solution would be making sure the actor and myself are wrapped up warm, I will also be supplying water and food to make sure we are both hydrated and not hungry. The cost of this solution is very cheap as I am only being two bottles of water and sandwiches will only cost £5, the feasibility of this solution is very easy as its easy to go out and buy sandwiches and water. This risk would apply to the production as if anyone got ill during production this would mean filming times would;d be pushed back which is not good.
Another hazard would be someone being hit by a car in the car park. The skills that the production team would need, would be responsibility and common sense as if we are filming in a car park so it would be obvious to be cautious when walking around the car park as there would be moving cars. The resources I will use to make sure we have will be a hi vis, this jacket will be imperative as there ill moving cars around the car park and this will make it easier for any cars to see us. There would be no cost to this solution as I already have a hi vis jacket at home and feasibility of this idea is easy to do. This risk applies to the production as if any one got injured during production this would be a serious health issues as well as pushing the production schedule back.
Someone could be hurt by the car we are using for example if the car is not on a flat surface and hasn't got the handbrake on it may role away causing serious damages to the things around it and maybe even damage to people. The skills the production team will need will be teamwork communication and common sense as they need to talk to each other to let each other know if the car is safely parked. There are no resources needed for this risk and the feasibility is very easy as it is just putting the handbrake on. This risk applies to the production as it can be very dangerous having a car which is not in gear or dosen't have a handbrake on as it can be dangerous for the team around.

Permission to film
I feel that it would be quite feasible to ask and gain permission to film on the site I want to. This is because its very easy to email the land owners and ask for permission as they can reply quickly. However sometimes emailing can take longer as it could take a day of weeks so the ideal thing to do is cll them and ask. So it would probably would be best to ask permission over phone. I also need to ask permission from my actor to put fake blood on them and for this I need them to be okay with this. This will be feasible as I've told my actor the story line and in this I included what kind of makeup I will need them to be wearing so they have an understanding of what I will be doing. This will also be feasible as my actor has been in many productions and understand that makeup in needed for a good production. As I am filming on a location I will need to ask permission from the land owner, so I sent the Grand Arcade Car park an email and this was my response.
This was the email I sent:
This was my response:
Legislation covering use of materials:
When it comes to filming there are a lot of legal issues, one of which is using child actors ( Children performance Regulations 1968 ) however as my actor is over the age of 18 he is no longer a child so this doesn't involve me. However this is really good that he is over the age of 18 as then it was be more feasible as there won't be as much paperwork which will then allow us too go straight into filming, I also think having an actor over the ge of 18 is better for moral and ethical issues because the genre of this piece is a drama/Thriller which really suits an older actor. A lot of drama/thrillers uses older actors as it goes with there theme as a lot of drama/thrillers can have a very dark tone to them, which I think should be acted only by older actors. This also helps not having a child actor as the story might effect the child actor as it could be quite disturbing for them and maybe even influence them to do something ethically wrong, so not having a child as the actor makes it a lot feasible. As I am not using really explosions there won't be any legal problems with my production. However as I am putting make up on my actor there are some certain legal rules for example what is actually inside the make up I am using so for example it isn't toxic to put on my actors skin. If it is too toxic to use I will have to find another way to give the same effect.
Working within the scope of the risk assessment and health and safety guidelines - For these four points you should discuss:
Permission required : As you can see I have asked permission to film on location as well as asking for permission to use my visual effects, this will make it feasible before hand.
Skills: The skills my team would need would be responsibility and common sense. I have told my actor and myself that we both need to follow the script and production schedule I have said that I expect fluidness from both me and my actor when on set. Because of this the skill set is now more feasible.
Finanacial Cost: I was required to pay £1.50 when going into the car park.
Time needed to gain permission: I emailed the land owner and they replied within a day so this meant I could start filming when I was ready and my production wasn't pushed back, this meant I could film on time. Because of this it means it is feasible.
Regulations: I am aware of the potential hazards that could happen with substances and hazardous substances even though I'm not using them. For example the 'Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974'. I have read through these and mad sure I understand them and what it stands for.
Producer: As I am the producer I will have a brief meeting with my actor before the production starts so both the actor and myself understand any hazards there will be whilst on set, by making sure we both discuss this, these risks can be voided whilst on set. I feel that this will make my crew more aware of the risks and they ill know how to make sure they don't run into any of these risks. I am also going to be sending the actor the production schedule along with the storyboard and script before hand, this will mean they will have time to go though it and make sure they understand what they need to be doing. I believe what I will be going though between me and my actor the risks won't be very feasible and have a smaller chance of happening.
