Explain the different techniques for animation
Chicken run (Stop Motion)
Genre of Chicken run: Film The style of chicken run is stop motion and all the characters are made out of clay. Chicken run tells the story of an American rooster who falls in love with a hen on a British farm. The couple decides to run away from the farm, but they must first contend with the evil farmer who is intent on keeping them under her control. The chickens decide to attempt an escape so they don't get turned into chicken pot pies. Chicken run was released in 2000 and was created by Nick Park and Peter lord. |

Structure
The first way the production team bring the characters and story to life is by the script, as this allows them to get a rough idea of what it will look like and what will be happening within the story. Having a script also helps understand the dialogue between characters, this then can help the animators to understand how the characters act such as facial expressions and movement. After the script has been produced, the storyboard is created, this helps lay out what is in each frame within the production. To help visualise this there are always sketches within the frames so the director snd the creators understand what each scene will be like and what the characters will be doing such as actions and speech.
When the script, development of characters and storyboard is completed and approved by the client, the building of the set and characters can start. The creation of the storyboard, set and characters took 2 and a half years to create for the film Chicken Run. The director will then create a detailed set plan for each scene, detailing the background elements, the puppet placement and camera angles. Here is an example of placements of the puppets on set.
All the chicken run characters are 3D clay puppets, the all also have moveable facial expressions and body parts. This is all done by a piece of kit called an armature, an armature is basically a wire skeleton to help structure the clay body, this means its then easy to add clay around the body. These Skelton wire frames will help represent how large the characters really are. The wire frames are attached to a stand so it is easy to build the clay around the models.
Techniques
The techniques used to create the characters in Chicken run was a very long stage within making the film. So to make the process quicker the creators created all types of movement and facial expression this is because they can just change the clay models instead of rebuilding them all of the time. This saves time when in production as the crew can literally swap over the sculptures body or head if anything does go wrong
The techniques used to create this stop motion affect is by placing the model on set positioning them and then slightly moving them, (up to 10 photos are taken) this stage is repeated over and over again till images start to create a motion. All parts of the puppets can be detached and reattached this makes it easier for the animators to change tinier aspects of the puppets such as blinking or movement of hands, this is to give to more of a professional look. Lighting is key when creating the claymation and this is another massive techniques that needs to be done right so it matches the last frames. When lighting the characters there are three main lights; key light, fill light and black light. This technique needs to be perfect otherwise some of the frames of the claymation can looking different and won't be as aesthetically pleasing to the audience as it won't be consistent. After the production is completed the editors then have to arrange each frame in post production to create the effect of images to motion. The whole product is then put together in this stage of the project such as editing, voiceovers, sound effect and music.
Pros and cons of claymation
Pros:
Cons:
- The claymation can look very authentic and give a traditional look of animation.
- Claymation is also very cheap to build.
- Has more of an artistic look.
- Claymation models are faster to make as you can use previous models, this makes the process much quicker then something like 2D animation.
Cons:
- The process in which creating the product (production) is very time consuming and can take up to years to perfect it.
- Creating the whole product needs a lot of crew and this can sometimes cost a lot of money, for example the people you would need to hire for a project like this would be: writers, directors, animators, sculptors, set and design creators, camera crew, puppet makers, editors , voice over etc.
- Children are now used to the 3D animation genre, this means they want more animations like this as the are used to it. This makes a higher audience demand on animation like this, so companies would make more money on 3D animation, rather than claymation
How the animation was made
Chicken run was created with clay puppets. The sets that were used were three dimensional to provide more texture to the scenes. There were a total of 40 animators working together to bring movement an life to the characters in the film. A minute of footage was equivalent to 1,440 frames, and when they created chicken run they didn't use the standard 24 FPS they instead used 20 FPS.
How the durations convey messages or the themes to the target audience.
The duration of chicken runs allows to convey a message to the audience, as throughout this feature length film the audience really has time to connect to the character, this amount of time allows themes to be built within the film. So having this length of film allows the audience to both connect to the character and understand the theme of the film, or any messages that are being conveyed within the film, the themes and messages are created by providing the storyline and the character development throughout the film.
Adventure time (2D animation)
Genre of adventure time: TV programme
The style of adventure time is 2D animation. Adventure time is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. It follows the adventures of a boy named Finn ( and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake — a dog with the magical powers to change shape and size at will. |
|
Structure
At early stages of pre production writers sit around a table and write a script for an episode of adventure time, this normally takes up to a couple of weeks to produce one 20 minute long episode (script). After this stage is complete illustrators then create the storyboard with individual pieces of paper they then arrange the storyboard to match the script when doing this they design what facial expressions or body movement each character will display in the show. When the storyboard is complete voice actors are then called in to do the voice of the characters.
Below is an example of the script, The other two images are an example of the storyboards which show emotions and body movement of the characters.
Once the storyboard is created, the script and storyboard are sent over to south Korea where the drawing are created on computers, they are scanned in where they are then inked and painted. The colours are then tested to make sure they are all correct and look the same. Backgrounds images are also created and other props as well are added into the computer generated images. This is all then sent back to america once it has been double checked by the Koreans, once back final edits and sound mixing are added to make sure it is as slick as possible.
Techniques
The techniques to create 2D animation are creating the background images this is done by layering images on to a background. The 2D characters are normally created on Adobe character animator, they are first created with a skeleton outline then images are layered on top of the Skeleton to create a character, normally there are already made characters these are called vectors. Once this is completed the characters can then be layered on to the background image. Once the animators have the background images and characters all set up, they will need to create paths for the characters to move in or any or the background images to move, this can also be done is the animators makes the characters move frame by frame. To create a real look and a traditional cartoon look lighting is key, the lighting on the character face can bring the expressions to life and make it seem more real. Depending on what the story line is the animators can create different tyres of mood with the lighting, such as a lighter scene would make it feel happier and a darker scene would make it seem more serious and darker.
Pros and cons on 2D animation
Pros:
Cons:
- 2D animation can look very aesthetically pleasing to the audience as it gives a traditional animation look.
- creating 2D animation isn't as time consuming as something like claymation which can take up to years to perfect.
- 2D animation has been practice for many years and technology has now become easier to use to create 2D animation.
- It s less complex to create than something like 3D animation.
Cons:
- 2D animation can be very time consuming and need a large team to create the product such as animators and writers.
- creating 2D animation can be very expensive
- It can be boring — Traditional animation can sometimes seem to be boring.
- Less demand — with the introduction of 3D animation most people prefer to watch 3D animation movies as compared 2D.
- It is time consuming to create cel-based animation templates which can never be reused and hence many studios are giving up 2D.
How the durations convey messages or the themes to the target audience.
Each episode of adventure time is 25-30 minutes long and within each episode they create an important theme or message which they try and convey to the audience. Because this is such a short period of time they have to create this theme or message early on in the program so the audience have time to connect with the characters and understand the themes that are trying to be conveyed. I think the time length suits the message they are telling and it makes it more memorable to the audience.

Chicken Run
The use of characters
protagonists and antagonists:
The main characters in Chicken Run is a British Hen called Ginger and a rooster called Rocky. Ginger one of the main protagonists is a British Hen who believes in this rooster called Rocky, she believes this rooster will teach all of the chickens to be able to fly so they can all escape this prison, throughout the film Ginger is the main character and she's the person that keeps everyone happy and together (As they are all trying to escape this 'prison '). Rocky the other protagonist is the rooster who does try and get all the chickens to be able to fly out of this prison, however who knows chickens can't fly but he still believes in them and still try to make it work.
The antagonist in Chicken Run is the woman called Mrs Tweedy who keeps these chickens locked up and is soon going to slaughter them and make them in to chicken pie. Throughout the film Mrs Tweedy is dressed in black to show how dark and cruel she really is, Mrs Tweedy also has a sidekick which is her husband (Mr Tweedy) who is also a antagonist but not as bad as Mrs Tweedy as he dosen't really want to keep these chickens in, he is only scared of Mrs Tweedy. This is shown throughout the film that Mr tweedy isn't as strong and he doesn't have and control or say in their relationship.
The journey they go through in the plot:
There are a lot of journeys these Chickens go through throughout the film, the main journey is too try and escape this prison that the live in, as all the chickens know they are going to be turned into pies by Mrs Tweedy. However throughout the film there are parts of love, break ups and re-uniting after a serious of events and journeys, however these chickens have a mentality to escape. The journey they go through in the plot is to escape Tweedy farm, by doing this the get help from an american rooster called 'Rocky'. When Ginger hides Rocky, when the circus come back and look for him they make a deal that rocky will show them how to escape. Throughout the film there are parts where the story feels like it won't be a happy ending, for example towards the end of the film when the chickens have built the plane to escape with mrs Tweedy knocks down the ramp its going to use to take off, but Rocky comes back after having abandoned them and puts the ramp back into places. After this ginger and rocky both get on the plane and escape together with the rest of the chickens. This part of the film has a really big moral its trying to get across, such as never abonned anyone and always come back for the people you care about.

What links can you find between the character and the narrative themes within the mediums:
The main narrative theme in Chicken run is all about escaping from their prison. This links to the characters in the film as all of the characters are wanting to escape this prison that they call home, as they all soon find out they will be turned into chicken pies. Even the main villain wants to escape, she doesn't want to b working all the time she just wants to be rich and well know from her chicken pies that she makes. The music in the film also helps prove the narrative themes of the film, there is one piece of music at the start of the film composed by an artist called John Powell, this same music is used in other films such as the Bourne identity and The great escape all with similar narrative themes 'escaping from somewhere or someone'. All the characters dream about escaping especially when the main protagonist sees a picture of a male hen free, and not in captivity. Another narrative theme would be friend ship, the production company who created Chicken run 'Aardman' have always used friendship as a narrative theme, for example Wallace and Gromit is all about his friendship with his pet dog and his love for his best friend (Gromit) similarly chicken run follows this same narrative as all the chickens bond together to try and escape and this only brings their friendship closer, though at some parts it does test it.

How do these characters represent either: the views of the writer / studio they come from / the place they come from in the world?:
The chickens really represent the place they come from ( England, Yorkshire), they do this by having a slight accent but also having that British mentality of never stopping and always trying. And I think that really helps people understand where these characters come from. Yorkshire is also know to be all of farm land and so by using Chickens this can help get across where the characters come from and what they represent. I think 'Aardam' productions where trying to get across a very serious point of animal captivity as well as human captivity and by using something fun like farm animals this makes it more appealing to the audience but at the same time get a point across. I think this doesn't only represent where in the world they come from but also the writers views and opinions on society.
The use of environments and themes in the global culture context of animations
Describe the environment used in the animations you are studying - how is this environment represented? Is it a true representation of the global culture you live in?
The environment within chicken run is a very harsh place with a lot of metal wires and wooden fences, however the environment is also full of mud and has very dull weather going on in the background this is to convey a message of what the British country side is like, Aardam also did this as this is a very true representation of what the British country side looks like. However this is not what the culture is like here in England but the writers wants to convey what is happening around the world such as captivity which is the main theme of this film. The Chicken huts are meant to represent prison cells and this is done by making them really tall dark and grey.
How do the narrative themes match the character and the environment?
The narrative theme of captivity matches the environment, this is because the film os full of wooden walls, metal fences and barb wire, this is an environment you would image something like a prison would be like. The characters also much the narrative theme of the piece as the are trying to escape from captivity, and they have this desire to be out of the chicken run. The whole film is about them friendship, believing and trust, with friendship being one of the themes this really matches the characters as nearly all the chickens in the films are friends, and we see as the viewer their friendship grow and break, we see all the ups and downs. I think this narrative theme really matches the characters.
Are they realistic or idealistic? Why?
The ending of the narrative theme in the film are very idealistic, this is because the film ends with a happy ending. The reason for the happy ending is because in the western world today want something happy, and something that isn't close to the truth. This is because they want to make people believe that thing can work out and that especially we make sure things such as the themes in this film aren't reality and that the western world is good. The Aardman productions that created chicken run is a British production company, and because the are based in western parts of the world they also like to focus on this outlook, they don't focus too much on morals but instead happy endings as they want western people to see the western world like this, instead of the crash reality that it really is.

The use of storyline based on a situation or series of events, or storyline based on a character
Is it plot driven or is the plot driven by the actions of the character? If it is a situation or series of events - what problems occur? How do the characters react/cope? What messages are sent to the target audience?
The entire film 'Chicken run' is driven by the actions of the chickens (characters). The reason for this is when the story is developing throughout the film, the characters do as well, giving them that drive to create the action. Throughout this film the protagonists meet several antagonists throughout the film, leaving them with problems during the rising climax and during the climax this therefore this creates tension within the film, and after our protagonists save the day it reaches the end of the evil narrative theme. The film is created on events which occur throughout the film leaving the main characters to resolve them so the narrative can carry on and they can then become 'Free'. This is created through many problems one of which is the evil protagonist which gets in their path, this then means in the film the protagonist have to fight off the antagonists. This then occurs several times throughout the film, the film uses the elements of good vs evil, which the characters have to react to. The protagonist nearly always wins in the films this is because the way the story is laid out. The messages that are given to the target audience are you need to work as a team to get things done as well as you need to persist to gain your own goal.

Describe the uses for digitised animation in the media
Adventure time
The use of characters
protagonists and antagonists:
There are two protagonists within this chosen digitised animation, they are called Finn and Jake throughout the tv series they are loved for being kind funny and heroic. Each episode always has a story line where Finn and Jake have to save the day or be heroic in some way, this there for makes them the protagonists in this animation, as they are always seemed to be doing good things for their community and protecting them from the snow king.
The protagonists in theses series is a character called the Ice king who always tries to destroy or take over the city Finn and Jake live in, by doing this he is seen in a bad light and shown as the bad guy as he is always trying to take over something or destroy something.

As this is a TV show there are many different plots, however in one episode Finn goes on a quest to find a new sword as his main sword gets destroyed by going into a 4 dimensional hole, after this he never gets it back, the episode shows how Finn goes on a quest with Jake to find a new one whilst fighting crime, and saving the towns people from being frozen over by the snow king.

There are many narrative themes within adventure time as there are so many episodes, but the main theme that I think is always put across in each episode is friendship, this links to the characters as the two man character are best friends, no matter who they are or what they are the will always be best friends. The narrative theme is also reinstated in each episode when nearly all the time Finn and Jakes friendship is tested by the adventure they take for example in every episode they go on quests to either save someone or something and when this happens there is always a fall out between Jake and Finn but they always come back together at the end of the episodes, to show that friendship can be tested and everything does work out for the best.

These characters represent the world they come from as they are american characters, and I think personally the writer where trying to get a world across that was meant to be seen as America. For example Finn and Jake live in the bizarre world with different creatures and different places and I think this is meant to be a metaphor of America, with all these bizarre stories and things that happen really make it similar to the actual world where adventure time is created.

Describe the environment used in the animations you are studying - how is this environment represented?:
The environment used in adventure time is all bright colours and soft round shapes, with this representation it gives the whole show a happy and joyful look. They use a lot of nature within the tv show to show to their demographic that it can be really pretty outside and that they should get out more and explore, because of the use of nature within the show there has to be lots of bright colours to portray that look of the wilderness. All the bright colours make the feel of the show much more positive towards the demographic.

What narrative themes are explored in your chosen animations?:
A narrative theme that is explored in a lot of the Adventure time episodes, is 'friendship' this is mainly because the demographic for adventure time is young children and this theme is something that is being taught to the young target audience.

How do the narrative themes match the character and the environment?:
The main character theme that I have talked about is friendship. The characters within adventure time do really match this theme, for example when we think about friendship we think of nice positive things and I think that is really conveyed to the characters in adventure time. One of the main characters Finn wears bright coloured clothing, with a bright coloured backpack and this really matches the theme of friendship as these colours have a feeling of happiness and friendship. The environment also matches with the theme 'friendship' with the bold colours and random shapes. The colours used within the environment are all primary colours with poetry a feeling of joy and 'friendship'. The shapes used are all soft and round shapes, no jagged shapes as this would a convey a message of hatred and anger, so the soft round shapes really helps match the theme of friendship.

Is it plot driven or is the plot driven by the actions of the character? If it is a situation or series of events - what problems occur? How do the characters react/cope? What messages are sent to the target audience?
The plot in this Tv show is driven by the actions of the characters. This is because the story
The plot of this film is driven by the actions of the characters. this is because the story develops as the characters and their actions do. Throughout the film the characters find out more about the mystery of the Were-Rabbit and figure out how to prevent the issue. This mystery develops the entire storyline and makes the story progress to then end where this issue is resolved and everything goes back to normal. The mystery is solved by developing the characters knowledge of the rabbits and how the Were-Rabbit is Wallace. The problem which occurs is how they will defeat the Were-Rabbit before the Annual Giant Vegetable contest. They encounter the Rabbit multiple times before actually defeating it. The way that the protagonist cope with this issue is that they find out what the cause of it is. Gromit finds out that Wallace is the Were-Rabbit, and he tells him to prevent the issue from happening again and again. However, Victor finds out as well and tries to kill Wallace. Gromit saves him and also saves the town from the Were-Rabbit. The message to the target audience of this film is to have good friendships. Wallace and Gromit are always there for each other and help each other through many different situations. Also, that being good is rewarding. Gromit saved Wallace and he was rewarded with the Golden Carrot award for his bravery and sacrifice to save Wallace and the town.

Assess the suitability of animations for the target audience.
Find 3 different types of animations, for example those created for apps, adverts, film or
television and identify:
- the type of product (what sort of animation is it)
- the target audience (who it is targeted at and why you think this is so)
- where it is distributed (on what platform)
- how visuals and narratives are used to communicate the purpose and genre (the
suitability) - the length of the animation and why it is this length.

Animation 1: 'Its payback time' ( Advert )
What type of animation was it?
The type of animation used within this advert is 3D animation. Who is the target audience in terms of age: The target audience age range fro this Tv advert is from 12 onwards. This is because the advert is about to cancer, and cancer is a massive thing that happens to millions of people so it is a very relatable advert. The reason why its for 12 and upwards is because in this advert their are deaths of the animated characters which some younger kids might not understand even though they are symbolising cancer It may be upsetting for them. The advert will appeal to this target audience age range because the advert has a simple and plot line which is easy to follow and understand. As well as the actual content will attract the audience as they are shown cancer cells dying, which is a good thing and people want to see. Race: When watching this advert their is no specific race that is displayed. This is mainly because the advert uses made up characters or characters that symbolises cells so their is no race that could be displayed. The advert was also distributed worldwide for everyone to see, so the advert is shown to all races. Gender: The advert is directed at all genders, as cancer is a problem within all genders. So this advert will be focused for both male and females. Though the main antagonist is male it Is still directed at both genders. Marital Status: Within this advert there isn't any from of the advert being targeted for couples or people who may be married. However anyone who is married or with someone it can be affected on them as they may have someone close with them who have been affected by cancer. Income: With this advert there isn't a income that is acceptable, the advert is aimed at anyones income, as anyone can give as much as they want to cancer research. As any amount of money is good. Occupation: This advert doesn't have a specific occupation that it is directed at. It is directed at anyone, as their hope is to raise as much money as they can to stop cancer, so anyone who can give money is who the advert is directed at, no one specific Educational Stage: For the educational stage there isn't a direct educational range, as the advert is directed at nearly everyone. Apart from younger kids in primary school for example. But anyone above that in an educational level it is shown to. On what platform did this animation distribute? This advertisement has been aired on TV, such as E4, channel 4 and channel 4+. However the advert will be mostly viewed on platforms such as youtube, as the advert would be used as an advert for other videos. This is because youtube is so widely used in todays world and everyone Is always using it. How were the visuals and narratives used to communicate purpose and genre? The purpose of this advert is to spread the word of Cancer research and to raise as much money for it, so they can find a cure for it. The visuals used within the advert (animated cells) are to indicate the cancer cells and them being destroyed by the cure for cancer. The narrative for this advert is very easy to follow fro all genders, age and ethnic backgrounds. The way the characters act within this advert connote the fact that they are bad characters and are irresponsible for example them drinking too much. The characters are their also to indicate to the audience what sort of characters they are and that they are cancer cells. The facial expressions of these chapters are all the same, they have no expressions this is because the advert is trying to convey a message that they are bad cells and have no feeling, because its only till the end you find out its about cancer cells. So throughout the advert you don't understand why these characters are being killed until the end. Right at the end of the advert there is a voice over used to tell the audience what the advert is about, how they can help, and when they can help. The voice used is a females voice this is because it engages the audience more. The length of the animation and why is it this length? The length of the animation is 2:00 minutes long, this is a long advert but because of the target audience, they can keep ended for longer as a lot of the target audience are older. The reason why its this length as well is because they need to build up this tension and narrative, to then tell the audience what the advert is really about. |

What sort of animation is it?
The film is a 3D animated film by Disney and Pixar Who is the target audience in terms of age: The age range for the incredibles is The age range for The incredibles would probably be for 4 year olds and upwards, this is because the film is rated a U meaning its suitable for kids 4 years old and upwards. The reason why I think its 4 and upwards is because the film is relatable to adults as well, seeing as both Disney and Pixar try and add humour in their films for adults as well as kids. Race: When watching this film there isn't a specific race targeted for this product, although the main characters are white there are other protagonist main characters that are black so their is no specific race that is targeted for. So therefore it will be bale to be viewed by all people. Gender: I personally don't think this product has a specific gender that it I aimed at. This is because the product represents man genders and is targeted at a younger audience. Also the theme for the film is based around Family, and in the film the family has a mix gender. The film also touches on kids in the family learn when growing up that being both genders, so they don't actually focus on one gender. Marital Status: Marital Status wouldn't apply to this, as the film is aimed at children of a young age. Income: There will be some disable income as this film was released early 2000 meaning a lot of people watching this filmed would have watched it in the cinema. However now there needs to be some disposable income so family's can watch it on platforms such as Netflix or devices such as laptops. On what platform did this animation distribute? This animation was originally distributed in the cinemas and on DVD's. Now however its distributed on streaming platforms such as Netflix, amazon prime, Now Tv. As well as being viewed on TV. How were the visuals and narratives used to communicate purpose and genre? The purpose of the film was to entertain and educate the audience. The genre of this film is children's animation. the visuals used in the film helps the audience relate to the characters and the narrative being told. The use of the characters i.e their emotions/ opinions and body movement help connote purpose to the film. The idea that some of the main characters are children the same age as the target audience help the audience to relate to the film, the is the same for the main protagonist the dad, so when dads go to see this film with their children can relate to this charters on some levels. The length of the animation and why is it this length? The length of the film is an 1 hour and 56 mins, this is because when it was created it was created to be a feature length not a TV show.
